What do you think caused this?

Hi guys,

I keep thinking about finding me some sturdy US boat, and stumbled across this beauty - which of course is way, way, way out of my price range.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/marine_classifieds/adv-search.cgi?id=63476-ad

However, the pictures show the interior to be covered with some kind of grime. What do you think caused this - submersion, storing without the hatches open, the fire extinguisher, hurricane damage, or just a sloppy chef?

The ad says "She has been extremely well maintained." So, is this some kind of condition to be expected from a boat in the Florida climate?

Please forgive me if I should happen to offend the owner or broker of the boat - that is not at all my intention. I am asking out of genuine curiosity.

The galley area looks like it was scrubbed too many times with a scotchbrite sponge and dish soap.

The dinette table looks to be brand new.

The rest of the wood looks like it was also wiped down often with some sort of soapy water and not wiped dry.I guess Pledge was too expensive.

Just my .02

That simply looks like water damage on pre-cat laquered cabinets. Can happen with normal use, or extremely high humidity. This is why we don't use laquer for cabinet finishes anymore. Chief ;)

If that can happen in high humidity, Ft Lauderdale is where it would happen!

So, if it so humid, would mold and mildew be prevalent as well? How do you combat this - keep the boat on shore power and keep the air-conditioner going constantly? But, seriously - could I buy a Florida boat from over here, sight unseen, and trust it to be free from mold & mildew & rot - and could I trust any surveyor's report on this?

Hi Stevens,

Just my own experience - I've bought from Florida sight unseen, and it's worked for me. I'm doing it again at the end of this season when the market drops off and prices are more flexible.

The deal went smoothly, except the boat ended up in France and I had to trace it and get it trans-shipped. No extra cost to me, because it was the shipping line's mistake.

Stillfishing - good to hear that your experience was a good one. What kind of boat are you looking to get next?

I think I want something like the Karnic 2460 or 2660 that can accommodate a family of 4 on weekend trips, be really seaworthy, and preferably have an inboard diesel.

http://www.karnicboats.com

Haven't found any similar ones in the US yet at comparable pricing (only outboards), so I may yet end up with a Karnic. They're made in Cyprus - have you seen any of these in Malta?

Edit: yes, I know, I just completely derailed my own thread here. Please feel free to bring it back on track.

Hi Stevens,

As you've hijacked your own thread - we have Karnic boats here, but not many. Local boatbuilders make similar boats, and Italy is just across the water, where there is plenty of choice.

I'm looking for a really good Montauk this winter, from Florida or nearby.

Ain't too many inboard diesels in the States, compared to Europe!

Stillfishing - The Montauk looks like a great little boat. I like the fact that it's "unsinkable", but would have thought that your kind of waters would require a larger boat than 17' ?

In that price range, I think I would have gone for the one listed below. It's a Grady, a bit larger, and with an inboard!

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/marine_classifieds/adv-search.cgi?id=73835-ad

Anyway, best of luck in finding your next boat.

Charlie - if that is the result of water damage, wouldn't the sales ad normally include that kind of information? This is the kind of possibility that makes me hesitant to buy sight unseen, or without a full surveyors report.
