I don't know which side of the fence I'm on as far as Consumer Reports goes, but I agree that most of the American Pony cars get abused to a near death....most, except mine. I bought this one 20 years ago. It's only got 41k on it. The only non-original parts are the tires and spark plugs.

I Armor All'ed the boat seats "1" time...

The seats were soooo slick that the passengers in the rear facing seats would be sitting on the deck, after gunning the engine,,,, if they didn't brace themselves. I had to wash that carp off.

YUP, boat seats are a no no!
Think about trying to hold on to your dirt bike after an appliication,
bin der dun dat. :)

Nice! I really liked the trunk lid on that body more than the hatch backs. It just says "two door coupe" better than a hatch back does.

I remember reading that Barretas had much higher maintenance costs than Chevy Corsicas. They were the same car (one sedan the other coupe). It's just that the Baretta was sporty looking and drivers beat the heck out of them.

If this off topic post has a point it's that if you take care of a car it "should" last. Unless there is a serious design flaw like Dodge neon head gaskets or the whole Dexcool fiasco. Car makers make such good products compared to 30 years ago.

While I am at it I have a theory as to why old cars would so often get rust holes in the middle of large panels and new cars never (rarely) do. Back in the day you had some guy moving body panels around manually with his greasy belly up against the panel. Contaminate the metal and paint over and it will not last.

Today robots handle the panels and the factories are temperature and humidity controlled. No contamination = no problem. Antone who paints knows that the prep work is everything.

Most marine dealers and boat related web sites like jc whitney. or overtons. not available at wallmart or fleet farm. Sunbrella marine fabric also recomends their product exclusively.

IMO, it's UV light that destroys plastic and rubber, more than heat or time. Thats why PVC and ABS pipe, are only suitable for outdoor use, if they are buried, protecting them from UV light. Otherwise, they age relatively quick.
It is mostly UV that breaks down pigments (and then materials). However, there are a variety of factors involved (temperature changes/humidity) that can accelerate the process... (which is why coastal Florida is probably one of the harshest environments on plastic materials).
With regards to vinyl, there isn't much you can do once the plasticizer leeches out (it is usually a function of the quality of the vinyl, but light energy doesn't help).
Basically what the protectants are doing is absorbing the energy from light that would otherwise affect the material. All the light is doing is putting energy into the chemical bonds and breaking them.
As stated before, because it is only temporary application, repeated application will keep things well protected.

At the suggestion of a recent Endust commercial, I tried it on the interior of my car. Initial impressions are pretty good. It made the car smell fresh, there was subtle gloss, but not as slippery and it doesn't appear to be attracting the dust like Armor-All does.
