Of course Vatican is a sovereign nation, Pope is entitled to treatment as a head of state, whatever that entails.

I didn't think that Diplomatic Immunity would apply to civil lawsuits. Should only be applied to criminal cases.

If he did in fact cover it up then he should be held liable. The Vatican is a sovereign nation therefore he is the leader of that nation but that should not apply to civil lawsuits in my opinion.

But then here in the US, the Roaebud Souix Indian reservation is federal land still under authority of the department of the inetrior, never officially turned over from the department of war many years ago. They have declared themselves a sovereign nation back in the 70's when Russle Means was organizing the American Indian Movement. Does that give him immunity?

No way does simple diplomatic immunity apply, that applies to violations of law while in the host country! The Catholic Church has received a free ride on the issue of pedophils for way too long. If the Pope is an alledged conspirator, he should be subject to the same legal ramifications as any citizen, he more than any other. Being "head of state", Pope, or Grand Poobah doesn't releive one of moral and legal responsibility to society.

Pope Head of the church. Bush head of Government. FEMA head incompetent,Bush gave him his job, so it is Bush's fault. All people who died can sue him. Same thing for Pope? I believe that is the jist of this.

Where does timing of the alleged infraction fit into this whole thing? I'm pretty vague about details (haven't followed the story), but doesn't this involve charges about cover ups Pope Benedict made BEFORE he was elected Pope?

Not positive, but I suspect in a case like this we might typically wait until the defendant was out of office before proceding, but as the Pope is a lifetime assignment, that is obviously off the table....

Not to sound disillusioned but isn't giving an ex Hitler youth any kind of immunity asking for trouble...?
