what does buzzer mean???

I just purchased a 2003 Merc 40 HP 4 stroke from this site. I've got it on my boat (a 18' flat bottom) and I'm in the process of getting it all to run well.

One problem I'm having is that when I push the throttle to maybe 3/4 open, the warning buzzer starts beeping. It'll go off immediately when I back off the throttle. Could someone tell me why this is happening?

There's a good stream of water out the cooling vent when the engine gets warm.

The motor came with a sticker that said "Warning, engine oil sump is empty!", but the oil stick shows that the oil is full and very clean. I also checked the oil in the gears by the prop, and that's full and clean too.

This is my first outboard over 10 HP that I've owned and operated so help would be appreciated.

Jason

I assume that this is a new motor. Did you install it yourself? Do you have a tach in the boat? You my be hitting the rpm limiter and sounding the alarm or you could have more serious problems. In your case, with a new motor (read in warranty) I would have my local dealer check it out. Do that and keep in touch!

Good luck!

Re: what does buzzer mean???

Thanks for your reply.

It's a "6 month old" motor, new to me. I installed it myself (heck, it's just a motor right???). It didn't seem that complicated.

My first guess was that I'm hitting an RPM limit, but I have ZERO experience with these motors so I wanted to get some feedback on it.

My boat's pretty light with a flat bottom, and the prop I put on it is a used one from another 40 HP motor. Don't know it's pitch or anything, but it is chewed up a little bit. I thought that that prop would be a good place to start for choosing a final prop for the boat.

Is there a place where I can get info on the meaning of the different beeps from the warning buzzer?

From this fourm, it seems that:

one solid buzz is heat
beeping is oil, or maybe 4 beeps is oil?

One guy on another board said that these engines have RPM limiters, so there would be no need for a RPM warning buzzer.

At any rate, next time I take it out I'll pay more attension to just how the buzzer is going off. It's beeping, but "4 beeps"?, I don't know.

Jason

OK, I read my manual. The engine has EFI, which apparently means that an intermittante beep is an "engine fault" and a continuous sound is one of many possible problem, including RPM.

I'm going look into putting a tach on the motor and see if it's an RPM problem.

jason

If you bought it from a dealer, I'd let them deal with it under Warranty.
