Re: What does maritime mean?
There are specific universal laws governing the high seas, in international waters, and that is what is generally known as "maritime law" and basically all countries that support shipping subscribe to these universal laws. It used to be that anything beyond the 12 mile limit was international water, although I think some countries, including the US, have expanded that to 200 miles offshore, but still that leaves a whole big chunk of ocean out there that does not have a specific nation, and its laws, attached to it. therefore the need to establish "maritime law"<br />Piracy laws, salvage laws, etc belong in this category.
