had the boat out for the 1st time everything went well. only problem is we were going along at 15 mph and when you hammmer down the gas she would get up a go like a bat of hell but then after 45 sec or so it would sound like to me (because i'm a car guy new to boating) like the transmission on a car was slipping. when you backed off the gas it was fine . can that happen on a boat motor.? any speed under 15 was fine alll day. also when at the dock had the boat warm up we had a strong pee stream from water pump but when we were under way there was no pee stream? she never got hot and over heated. got home and hooked her up to the muffs and we had the pee stream. what gives with that. the engine is a 1984 evinrude v6 150 .
thanks

1st thing I would check for would be a spun hub on the prop. Mark the hub and prop with a line then run it and see if it's still lined-up. In my experience if it were a lower unit issue it would be jerking hard as it was going out of gear.

Hope this at least gives you a starting point.

That's a spun prop for sure, go have it rehubbed or replace it.

The telltale will flow very nicely on muffs "without" a water pump because you are forcing water through the system from the hose. Not a valid test for water pump operation. If you had the engine trimmed up high enough the prop can simply blow out as it's called because it loses bite on the water. A spun hub means the rubber bushing that separates the prop hub from the outer blade area has broken its bond. At slow speeds the bond is good enough to propel the boat. When more power is needed the bond is simply not strong enough and slippage occurs.

thankyou guys. as far as the telltale from my understanding it should pee out when under way correct? when we were at the dock 1st start up (warming herup) we had a nice strong stream from the telltale then we hit some mud shallow water then i noticed it was not peeing out. it ran and never over heated .

Sounds like your mud flat caused a spun hub in the prop. Also may have picked up enough garbage to take out the water pump. I'd have that checked just to be safe.

Try cleaning out your tell tale hole with a lenght of weed whacker line; may just be stopped up with mud. Happens all the time down here on the coast.
