I have a Volvo Penta 5.7GL with a Cobra SX. I know V-P makes their own branded 10w-40, but does one have to use theirs? Is any full synthetic 10w-40 good? Or should I be looking for specific marine application oil?

You’ve got a lot of choices; you can use any syn 10/40, the 15/40 that many people use, Merc’s 25/40, or even a straight 30 or 40. The only oils I would not use are conventional 5/30 or 10/30. They are more apt to thin out under sustained high rpm use.
Ive used the Merc 25/40 for years with good results.

Delo 400 SDE 15W-40 or Rotella T4 15W-40.

I personally use the Delo now, because the Delo has the highest CK-4 rating for diesel engines AND maintained the "SN" rating for gasoline engines.

The Rotella T4 is a fantastic oil, too, meeting CK-4 for diesel engines. However, they dropped the "S" rating for gasoline engines from their product literature, meaning that they are no longer qualifying it for gas engines against the API spec.

In the past, I've not had good luck with auto oil seals in moving an older engine from Dino to Syn. I'm fixing to pickup a 2007 5.7Gi. 22' bowrider. The dealer will have changed oil (of which I will find out what they used). Prior owner usage unknown. thoughts on Synthetic? Probably only about 40-50 hours in summer. Mostly 27-35 mph cruising. Water sports mostly thing of the past. Engine=260 hours according to meter, and visual appearance.

Any thoughts on Syn versus Dino?

If Volvo Specs a Synthetic they had their Reasons. They do Market an Oil, it is a Good Oil. I will use it as it is only a few Dollars more per Year vs an Automotive/Truck Oil that may or may not be suitable for the Operating Parameters of a Marine Engine

If the spec for a 2007 is syn, I will definitely use it. It is my preference.
