Re: what floats your boat?

Winter time, when we're not fishing is usually the time we till the garden and get ready for the February planting, fix up the house and work on landscaping. I also sew everything from boat covers to patio awnings and window treatments and other home decor projects. Sometimes I even get paid for it. I always have a project going.

Well if I can't include thinking about fishing most of my time is spent mindlessly working. Otherthan that I can usually be found playing hockey or messing around with my guitar. My main hobby in the "offseason" is to fashion wooden lures, only bad thing is I've never caught anything on them. Still a fun way to waste some time.

I like to do woodworking, i like to hang out in the local saloons maybe play some darts or cribbage. saturday afternoon cribbage tournaments are always alot of fun. and if there is a group going and its a nice day i might do a little ice fishing. but that usually just leads back to number two. :D

Ralph, you can find most everything for woodcarving from Sugar Pine. They have videos, books and plans for just about anything you want to carve. As far as tools go, Flex-Cut are really good tools. You can buy beginner sets (which I have) and buy individual tools to complement the set. A good investment would also be a quality sharpening system and leather finger cots (I have cut myself pretty badly a couple times, and it's much better and less painful to cut yourself with a sharp tool.). I just pulled out my catalog and they don't list a website-I'm sure they have one, but the # is 1-800-452-2783. Good Luck. :)

Perfect! Thanks to both of you.

Why do people only seem to carve foul or santas? :D

Gauge - do you have any of these books or videos? Which one should I buy to get started? I do a lot of cutouts with a scrollsaw and singnage with my router so my skills aren't too bad. I just want something that would wlak me thorugh basic hand and machine carving.

Knightgang

Thank you very much. I missed your answer when checking earlier today. One of my nieces is coming down tomorrow and this will be fun to play with. I know your definition of cold is harsher than mine(overcast and 57 degrees today), but I spend as much of my time outside as I can gardening, taking walks across the mountain side, pittering around mostly. If it's too chilly I curl up with a good book or come on the computer and see what's new with iboats or find out something new. I love learning about any kind of history and how things work. www.howstuffworks.com is a very interesting site.
Bassy

Re: what floats your boat?

Ralph, I never read a book or watched a video on woodcarving. It just evolved over the years, from whittling the end of a stick as a kid to carving fish and fowl now. I have a couple friends who have answered my questions when they pop up. I like to carve fish because they are easy, smooth lines and not a tremendous amount of detail. I've also done a couple duck decoys, but they take too long, way too much detail for me.

Look around, get a few tools, pick up a piece of tight grained wood and carve the first thing that comes to your mind. It is addicting.
