What Gasket Sealant for Thermostat

I will be replacing the Thermostat on my engine.

The repair manual states to "coat both sides of the new gasket with gasket sealing compound". Now I walked into my local auto part store the other day, and was dumbfounded by the huge selection - silicone, rubber, RTV, gasket makers, etc, etc.

What is a good "gasket sealant" to use for the thermostat gasket?

I never use a 'sealant' on the thermostat housing. If the mating surfaces are good, I just use the gasket and coat the housing surface with Gasgacinch. It is a light adhesive that allows you to remove the gasket without having to chisel it off.

I use it for auto and marine. Never had a leak or a weep.

Heh...

I don't use any gasket seal at all, and I still have to chisel it off.

smear a thin coat of clear silicone on both sides of the gasket and it wont leak OR have to be chisled off next time.

Mine is currently using ONLY RTV... no gasket.

Generally, most auto related repair manuals stress do not use RTV and a gasket. One or the other.

If I read that statement while working on my boat, I would grab my Mercruiser Perma-Seal stuff, though.

If you use Boat Doctors advice it is a very thin coat of aviation gasket sealant. Its a liquid and non-hardening,will not leak and the next time the gasket will come right off.
Silicone has no place on a boat engine.....
