What gear oil can be used

I am changing the gear oil on my Volvo penta 5.0. It requires GL5 70w 90 synthetic gear oil. Can I use a regular gear oil GL5 70W 90 rather than synthetic???

I think you have already answered your own question!
I WOULD NOT use conventional oil on a drive which calls for synthetic.
Are you willing to risk a $3,000 drive over a couple of bucks difference per bottle?
I'd do what the factory manual calls for and have piece of mind.

You didn't give much information on your drive, but you're probably running cone clutches instead of dog clutches. They create more heat when shifting.

I can sympathies with the questioning by the OP. I have always questioned whether the written instructions were the only way to go. I'm 70 years old now and have hundreds of 'Operating Manual requirement' challenges behind me.

My advice: If you ever question the manual/specifications, go with the manual. If/when you no longer question what the manual says - do what you want.

Also, as mentioned in other threads, avoid LS (limited slip) gear oils on the Volvo and bravo drives with cone clutches.

I used to use the Mobil 1 in my drives but have now just gone to using the Volvo oil since all the Mobil 1 bottles I see mention LS.

Amsoil 75W/80W-90 Universal Synthetic Marine Gear Oil works good.
Less $ than VP oil.
I do not sell Amsoil.
