what gear oil do I use for lower unit on a 1965 9.5 johnson

I've seen the answer on the post's when I wasnt looking for it but when I need to look it up I cant find it.

Anyways if some one can tell me the type Id appreciate it or a website that I can go to reference oil types ect.

As stated in the title I have a 1965 Johnson 9.5HP.

80W90 or straight 90W

Hi woodsyfeller. You need to use 80-90w gear oil. You can get it at wal mart or any marine supplier.

some say to use marine grade only..of the above mentioned wt's, but i use automotive, with no probs.

Stick with the marine grade. Think about it. Does the rear end in your vehical run under water??

this topic has been beaten to death in other posts, but its the ops choice, truck/car differentials get hot, cool down and condensate, obs are under water, they both get water from one way or another. just make sure its not leaking, and if it is......change it as often as is needed, or fix the leak! (for the few bucks its worth, i drain and change after every tank of fuel on my old motors....maybe a waste....but piece of mind!!)

Its all done bought a slick little pump that attaches to 32 oz bottle.Went ahead and use marine grade right next to the automotive.
