I have one on my boat but its peeled about 12 inches. Ive read 5200FC, but that stuff takes days to cure. Is this the best glue, seems more like sealant than glue?

Don't know what kind you have, but keelshield and keelguard I thought were guaranteed for life. If it is one of them, I would reach out to the company to send me a new one.

...in addition, while it is off, I would pay careful attention to detail when prepping the keel for the new one.

3M 5200 FC is the Fast Cure and cures in 24 hrs. ... if temps are within the working range of the product. It is an adhesive sealant.

Depending on where you live, this isn't the time of year to be trying to work with adhesives unless you have a heated area that you can keep the boat in at 70*F.

I suggest contacting the manufacturer of one of the 2 brands or both and see what they recommend.

between 70-80 degrees in the garage at the moment. am considering just ripping it off, too problematic they are.

There's that too.

What kind of boat is it and do you beach it or boat in shallow water much?

most keel guards are held on with 3M VHB tape.

5200 will work just fine, assuming it is the adhesive and not the substrate that is failing.

Not trying to steal a thread, but are the keel guards worth it? Thinking on getting one myself? I guess I'll find out with this thread.

Best $100 bucks I spent on the Larivee restore. Was just out fishing today and it is so nice to not have to worry about it AS much as I would if it weren't there. Makes launch/back on trailer less intense. Beaching is not as panicky either. Honestly was the easiest decision to spend $$$ on this item. I would highly recommend.

where did you get a keelguard for $100, mine cost $600 as far as im aware. imo if you are not careful with your boat they are definitely good. to be honest though for beaching id question whether they are worth it all the way to transom.

bacl to me now.

now my keel guard has lifted in that one 2 foot spot, do i just some how lift that particular section, sand it and the keel?

definitely the glue that failed, i can see it in pieces of yellow on the glass.

5200FC or 4200 would be a pain to use,,, unless there is an easy way to clamp the keel guard against the boat while the 5200 cures? (A light spritz of water will help the 5200 or 4200 cure.)

I'd use contact cement, tape off everything, apply contact cement where it needs to go with a chip brush, let it tack over, press KG in place, then either roll it with a laminate roller or hammer the entire area with a dead blow hammer.

Definitely worth it if you beach. Why not contact one of the companies that make keel protectors and ask them? I think 5200 would be a pain., but who knows?

I think the issue is if you use keel rollers, and the boat has weight on those rollers.

if you paid $600 for a keel guard, you were taken. even West Marine isnt that high price. I think I paid $120

they do not get used all the way back to the transom. if you read any of the recommendations, they go from the bow roller to about mid-way back. I used a longer than recommended on my 19', I used an 8' keel guard simply because I beached the boat every trip out and I would power onto the beach a few feet. recommended was a 6'

Best $ spent on the boat.

thats aussie dollers. i didnt pay for it. but thats what they cost. approx $500+ for the length of the boat.

im not sure if its a keelguard, but it doesnt look like those budget rubber strips. its purpose built, speed designed and very thick.

Weldwood solvent based should do the trick.

As for using duct tape and 5200, I bet the tape starts releasing if there is a weird pull against it, like the KG pushing outward on the tape. I would want something that presses the KG directly against the hull, instead of trying to pull across it. Is the loose part on the bottom of the hull or up towards the bow? There are ways to press the KG against the hull, but some would require serious cobbling if it's a weird angle.
