What goes in these holes?

Gentlemen,

I have a plate on the top of my Mercruiser 4.3L 1991 V6 engine with 2 small holes. I assume they are for some vent pipes (or something else) but I cannot find anything that describes if the holes should be left open or if a vent pipe (from the distributor, etc) is suppose to go in the holes. There is a red arrow to show the plate. If any of you could tell me what goes in the holes I would be very gratefull.

Many thanks

Gary

That looks like the holes for a couple small metal tubes that will allow heat to get to the choke which in turn allows it to open as the engine warms up.
IF you use an electric choke, then these holes are un-necessary.
From the angle of the pic, and the yellow fuel line, it's hard to tell what kind of choke set-up you have.

looks like no choke set up. The rod coming out of the carb right above it is where the choke set up attaches. It is gone so you have no choke at all.

Thats what I see, I think the two small holes may be for the chokes T-stat. On my 350 I have a similar set-up cept mines got the choke linkage and the coil spring (T-stat) in that location. on the t-stat the base has a pin and a screw to line it up and clamp it in place with the screw. maybe I'm wrong but thats what it looks like to me.

Re: What goes in these holes?

All you have there is the block off plate in the manifold for the choke tubes when they were used for heating the choke coil that mounted on the manifold. One hole is for heat, the other is nothing more than a locating pin for the choke coil (aka choke oven or stove)
Your engine, however, did use that. Your carb is missing all of the choke assembly and the ELECTRIC choke coil. The wires for it are just above the red arrow you drew.

Re: What goes in these holes?

Thanks Guys,

The engine rolled over and broke off the electronic choke, I managed to get the broken screws out and will refit it shortly, just wondered what the plate was for. As I am using an electronic choke, should the 2 holes be blocked or can they be left as they are? I don't want rubbish getting inside the engine.

I think if you look, you will see they are already blocked off.

Thanks Don, I will take a closer look, they didn't seem to be blocked when I took the picture!! Maybe I need new glasses.

That plate is over an exhaust passage connecting L&R heads through the intake manifold. If it wasn't blocked off, you would have exhaust blowing out of there while running the engine.

Re: What goes in these holes?

Thanks Wire2, I was worried that the holes vented into the crankcase, so I could get muck going into the engine. There is definately no exhaust gasses coming out of the holes, so if you are correct, then the holes must be blocked.. Many thanks.
