Take a look at Minn Kotas web sight. They have a good illustration on extending wire lengths.

If you search using battery, you will find many threads addressing this issue. Starting batteries and trolling batteries are made differently. You have to watch how far you discharge a battery or you will not get a long life out of them.

A number 4 should be fine. Just make sure you use the correct crimper when you crimp on the ring terminals and use heat shrink tubing to cover the crimps. Don?t try to improvise with a pair of channel locks or something else, it just doesn?t work. Might want to check out this site, they are about a fourth the price of some place like West Marine.http://genuinedealz.com

If all your looking to do is get starting power to the OB and alternator output back the the battery then 8ga would work OK. If you want to run a trolling motor of more than 30# on that same line then consider going to 4 or at least 6. As always, bigger/heavier wire is the best choice if you want to minimize losses and/or plan for loss due to eventual corrosion.
