What happened? IL6 115 Mariner shot after tuneup

I recently purchased a 17ft boat with a 115 Mariner IL6. I took it to a local shop for a tune up because it would stall often around the dock going from forward to reverse and vise-versa. The motor ran great other wise. They told me #3 cylinder was dead and I needed a new stator and switch box (how did it run so good then?). I got it back and the first thing I noticed was my plastic 6 gal tank was collapsed and the vent was closed. I had to use an electric air pump to pop it out. Took it to the river and ran good at idle but fell on its face trying to go up on a plane. It would miss at 3/4 throttle or more and would not go above 4000 rpm. I took it back and complained. They checked the compression and all read 120 psi except #2, which was 115. So they ran it and then #2 came it at 80 psi (shouldn't it go up after running?). They then inspected the piston from the plug hole and said it is pitted and after 1/2 hour aluminum particals from the piston short out the plug. They also had to replace the gasket under the water jacket because when they got it back from me they said it was leaking. I'm just trying to make sense of this. I feel like I paid big bucks to have my motor wrecked! My question is... could doing a tune-up while the vent cap is closed have caused this? What else could all of the sudden make a piston pit and start fouling out a plug? They tell me it just a coincidence it happened when it did.

Blinq,<br /><br />I'd like to know the serial number or age of your engine, but in the meantime the aluminum on plug #2 is really bad. The engine now needs to striped and rebuilt. The #2 piston needs to be replaced.<br /><br />O.k. Possible causes. <br /><br />1) Timing too advanced. Usually chews up #3 first.<br />2) Fuel too lean. I guess the main question is 'did they run the engine under load, in a test tank, with the vent closed?'<br />3) Fuel octane number too low. Causes detonation.<br />4) Overheating. Usually takes #1 first.<br />5) Lack of oil in the fuel.<br /><br />If the engine was incorrectly setup (timing and synchronization), then it only needs about 15 minutes running to kill it.<br /><br />Sorry to be bearer of bad news.<br /><br />Chris.............

You had a fuel delivery problem which cooked one of your cylinders. It needs to be rebuilt.<br /><br />The collapsing gas tank issue (read lean mixture) probably sent that cylinder over the edge.<br /><br />The cylinder could have been running lean for quite some time. My thoughts are to a: stuck reed, blown crankcase seal, clogged carb.<br /><br />I do not think it is the wrenches fault. He did what was asked. However, in your defense, I would have had them rebuild the carb's as part of the tune up. However, that is serious labor $$.<br /><br />By the way, a six cylinder Merc will run pretty good on 5!

It's an 1985 Mariner S/N 6583363.<br />Yes they ran it under load in their "Dyno" test tank where they tell me they can change the pressure at the exhaust.

hey bling, i used to live in york, pa.<br /><br />anyways, if your wallet can swin it, get it rebuilt and keep that motor. they are monsters!!<br /><br />as said above, you will need to at the least re do cyl #2<br /><br />look around on ebay, or contact ebay user "clams_canino" he rebuilds and builds and fixes and repairs nothing but inline mercury's and has any part and all the knowledge one could ask for. <br /><br />oh yeah, get a manual if you dont already!
