What happened to my trim guage?

I was hooking up my trim guage today for the first time since replacing the motor (88 Johnson 110 and OMC guage of the same vintage) and when I turned the key on the needle in the guage shot all the way to the top and stayed there even after turning the key off.
I have 12 volts coming into the guage on the purple wire and the other 2 wires were colour matched to the wires that came out of the sending unit. According to the testing procedure in the O.E. manual, the guage is shot. (I confirmed the sender works by using the ohm meter)
My question is why did the needle shoot to the top and stick there?
I just want to be sure I didnt hook it up wrong so that when I buy a new guage I dont end up with the same result.
I should also mention that there is a fair bit of condensation on the inside of the guage if thats relevant??
