My old Merc has a shaft length of 20" and my boat measurement is also 20".
I'm looking to upgrade my outboard and am not sure if I have to stay with a 20" or if I find a 25" shaft length motor, will I be changing the performance characteristics of the boat by going to the longer shaft?
Thanks for any help.
Dave

Ditto snapperbait, longer lower unit will increase drag and underwater clearance. If you'er buying a new motor over 25 HP, you may want to consider a long shaft IF you plan on keeping that motor to put on a new hull. Reason being is: most larger boats that require more than approx. 25 HP have the taller transomes.
