Is that part of the thermostat ? or is it seperate ? and if so, where is it ? just wondering if that needs replacing when you're trying to run down an overheat problem. 60 hp 3cyl

Some people refer to a thermostat as a poppet valve.

A poppet is a spring loaded valve in the head or block that relieves excess water pressure at high rpm's. On V-4 and 3 cylinders at WOT the t-stats are bypassed as poppets open and excess water is dumped to the heads and to the exhaust. Yours is #101 in diagram

Re: What is a poppet valve ?

thanks for sending the diagram but I couldn't get it big enough to see where #101 is. Do poppet valves need replacing, or can you test them ? Is it under the same bolted down cover as the thermostat ?
