On an abused and neglected engine -- 5 hours. On a well maintained and properly operted engine, thousands of hours. But there is no exact number. Things can break on engines that have had the best of care.

Re: what is considered high hours

In nearly 60 years of messing with outboards I have never seen one wear out. Things break with little regard to how old they are or how much use they have had.

They break with regard to how well they have been maintained or how much abuse they have suffered. Sometimes they break for reasons beyond human understanding.

So trying to predict how many hours it takes to wear one out is, I think, futile. I think the end of an outboards life comes when there has been a failure that would cost more to repair than it is worth to the owner of the moment. That may come at a few hundred hours or many thousands of hours.

The popular figure of 1500 hours is a figment of imagination thought up by guys who want a new engine or want to sell a new engine.

It should last until fossil fuels are no longer obtainable.

I got the message. Thanks for the expert advice. I kinda figured that a # would almost be an impossible quote considering all the different situations.

I will continue to run and maintain my J200 until I think it would be economically wise to replace. As of the moment it is smooth and responsive.

May you all have another great day of boating. tnx. toghog:)
