The motor is a 1999 Johnson 50hp 2st model J50pleea. I was draining and filling the lower unit when I noticed something shiny along with my shift rod. Upon closer inspection I found that it is some sort of machine screw and a zip tie. The machine screw is laying loose in the void/space that the shift rod area has between the lower unite and mid section(is that the correct terminology?) and the zip tie is tied around the shift rod and trimmed off.
I have never noticed this before. Is there any reason that a screw could have come loose above or below this area and settled here? It is to big to pull out so I im not sure that it could have gotten in there while driving or in use. Is there any reason for a zip tie to be around the shift rod?
If you have any kind of idea as to how these items got here or if they are just from some sort of damage that I am as yet unaware of please tell me. The motor is running fine to my knowledge, had it out recently and it worked like a champ. I got stuck once in the lagoon and had to use the motor to get out, had it at wot for a few moments, could this be the cause of the screw?
Lastly as I said before I cannto get it out. To remove it would require me dropping the lower unit I believe...and I have never done this. Im sure it would be at least 1.5 hours billed at my mechanics and that would be around 150. The obvious answer is that I need to remove it...but will it cause problems if left alone for a while?
A photo is attached but it is not the best.
