what is it?

Never noticed this hose before. It runs into the lower part of the outdrive and comes from the multi-wired/cabled harness. A blowup diagram just calls it "hose" it is rubber and frayed to the point that I just wrapped it in electrical tape although it will be submerged when running. Yamaha C-90hp 1999.

Same exact motor model and year as mine....looks like the speedometer tube....if you have a speedometer it's important but if not then it doesn't matter.....

Robert- got to be right. My speedometer hasn't worked for at least ten years and never missed it. I only started storing the motor in the travel position in the driveway recently so never even saw this thing before. Thanks again !

I can't see much in the picture but from what you discribe I agree it's the speedometer pickup tube. Just to confirm you can run the motor, if it needs to be replaced cut or disconnect it and watch water should shoot from it.
