I have a 1966 80HP Johnson Sea-Horse Outboard.
As you will see in the picture I have two springs hanging, with nowhere to connect them. Does anyone know what is missing, or where they go? Also I don't know where the engine release should be connected to?
I think you are missing a part. There should be a yoke that goes around that lower part and hooks to that shiney piece. The part you are missing is the reverse gear lock down. It locks the motor down when in reverse so the lower unit doesn't climb out of the water.

Hello.
You are missing the part that is called the "locking lever". On a '59 seahorse the parts number would be :305269.
It roughly has the shape of a horse shoe.

Does anyone have a picture of it? I would consider making my own bracket. I was thinking of two peaces of metal fastened on each side, and hooking the springs to them. That would work wouldn't it?

The parts your missing should be way easier to come by used than to make. Do a little scrounging around. You may have to buy a new shaft for the dogs to latch to.

Here's sorta what yours will look like. As you can see it only pins to the piece you still have and it fulcrums under that cast block sticking out.
Muff

You need to place the picture on a Web Site first in order to post it. Many here use This One as it is free and easy to use. Once you have the image on the site, just copy the URL in the address bar once the picture is open and then paste it in the "Image" box when you reply here. Simple, Huh. :)

I went to a local boat scrap yard, and would you believe they had an exact match outboard year and all. So I have the part needed, thanks for your guidance. Now gotta wonder if I should just buy the whole motor from the yard for parts...

If the price is right, grab it up. It will save you $$ down the road.
