Hi all.

Great forum.
I purchased a boat that has a holden 186 6 cyl inboard and a red gear box stamped clae.

I have a problem that it goes in reverse ok and neutral is a little hard to get to but forwards it sort of goes in but hardly turns the drive shaft even with high revs, but pull back the bar shifter to reverse and it flies. its like the clutch slipping?
Not sure how these boxes work but if someone has a manual or something to help me fix it i would appreciate it.

If someone could tell me what this was originally behind to hopefully help me track down a manual too in case no-one here can help.

thanks heaps. Hopefully ill get this in the water going forwards soon :)

There is a linkage cable which shifts as you move the gear lever. You can adjust this cable. There is also probably a linkage inside, though i'm not used to that gearbox. Perhaps, its barely shifting into forward and thats the cause of the slippage. Try to disconnect the linkage for the shifter at the gearbox and attempt to manually shift from R-N-F and see if the issue is a linkage adjustment.

The cover appears to be held on by only 2 loose bolts. Pull it off and have a look inside. It might be a simple fix.
I believe there's a clutch involved, it may be worn out.

The Holden engine was made in Australia in the '70s, while Clae was a gearbox manufacturer.

Good luck.
By the way, I think it is a simple FNR gearbox, rough as guts but very simple and if you wish to get it running any good machine shop should be able to whip some replacement bits up for you.
