:D Hi guys n gals, just getting into boating and purchased a small 14ft fletcher cathedral hull speed boat. the engine that came with it has johnson seahorse and a big 18 on the back, on the side there were numbers that i think were the horse power (40hp im told) the model no i think is FD12 1r. Can anyone shed any light on whether this is correct. Thanks.

FD12 is a 1958 18 hp Johnson.

Re: what is my johnson (no inuendo)

Sure is. That would be a '1967 longshaft 20hp. They made some improvements on the 18hp by that time making it 20hp, hence the same letter code. Later on they refined 25hp out of the design.

Picture of a '58 18hp, click here.

I can't seem to find a picture of a '67, but it has a fiberglas cowl instead of a metal one.

Oh, the 40hp engines started with RD. I take it that F isn't an R?

The 40hp engines are much larger than the 18-20hps. One identifyable difference is that the 18-20hp's lower unit is held on by 4 small bolts, and the 40s are held on by 6 small bolts and 1 large one which may be hidden.

EDIT: I noticed in your other post you mentioned the serial number. That number is consistant with outboards built in 1967. In fact, I'm nearly certain serial numbers starting with C (anadian) didn't start until the late 60's.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP GUYS, THE 58 LOOKS WAY TOO OLD SO I RECKON IT IS A 67, CHEERS PAUL. ALL YOUR HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED, JUST ONE MORE THING - DOES ANYONE HAVE A MANUAL OR KNOW A SOURCE ABOUT HOW TO GET A MANUAL FOR THIS ENGINE. CHHERS, GAV.

iboats have the SELOC manual HERE , but I'm not sure if they ship overseas, some stuff they do but most they don't.
If they don't then THESE guys do, good prices, fast and cheap shipping, that's where I got mine.
