What is My motor?

I was told that the engines in this boat are GM 170 Mercs. The valve cover looks GM and it says 170 on them. Could this be the troubled 3.7 470 Ford? Help... I have a n offer to purchase pending sea trial tommorrow.

It could be. A serial number will tell for sure.<br /><br />Those engines were Merc's ill fated attempt at manufacturing their own engines.

If they are inline 4 cylinder motors the head is from a 460 ford. The 3.7 liter 470/170 is a good size motor. The block is aluminum and the head is steel. When running properly they are real good with lots of torque.<br /><br />Bob
