If you don't want to spend all that rebate money on a repair manual, then you can go to your library and find the manual there. They will not let you take the manual home, but they will let you make copies of the pages that you need for your repair jobs. They may charge you about 5 to 10 cents per copy though. If you do that make sure that you get the front and back pages done. Good luck.

A no brainer - Buy the manufacturer's manual specific to your engine. It will pay for itself your first job.

Re: what is the best repair manual to buy

I bought my OEM Service Manual on eBay for $18. This was for a 1975 Johnson 135HP.

I was using a Clymer's service manual for my motor, but as all will tell you on this site, toss it out (well...not so fast). The info in the Clymer's had errors which took me for a ride. Import things like timing settings and other issues.

But, I will be honest a at least comment that the service manual does make a few assumptions when it comes to certain issues (as in - you know what the heck you are doing already). So I did find the Clymer's useful because it filled in a few gaps that the service manual did not bother to mention.

The OEM won't steer you wrong, ask questions here to fill in the gaps on anything you don't understand, and you'll do fine. That is my non-outboard-machanic opinion:D

I agree with randy, if you only have one, it better be the factory service manual.

Seloc is written for the do-it-yourselfer - has some pretty useful tidbits - workarounds for special tools, etc. But there's so many years & models covered - "your part might look like the one pictured" -
