OK - 2 footitis has happened already - bought the boat in October and after a several overnights with the family it is apparant that we need to move up. The boat has a V-berth and an aft cabin, but after the admiral and kids are on, there is really no place for extras. I am interested in a layout with a front berth, (V-Bunk?), separate from the table. It has become a hassle to keep putting the table up and down, and moving overnight bags, etc. Not sure if it is 2 footitis or 4 footitis, but definietely need a little more room. Also -when stuck inside due to bad weather, we are all a little too close.
With the market the way it is does anyone have any creative ideas on selling a boat?

with the way the market has been you are not likely to sell that boat quick unless you make it very attractive (loose $$$$$). However, maybe you can use it as a trade in at the boat dealer. I think that might be your best bet but I would still try to sell it privately for a bit to see what happens...

the key these days is price. I snapped up my 14'er on the spot due to price. he was asking $750 and I knew it was a $1200 boat. I might have bought it at $1000-$1200 but I wouldnt have handed over the cash on the spot. I sold a canoe and a Kayak the same way. both were sold at the bottom of the price scale and both sold the same day. I also included PFD's and paddles on both. that seemed to sweeten the deal. selling a unit "turn key" is always better. I lost a couple hundred dollars, but they were both out of my hair the same day.

The fact of the matter right now is that used boats are going for a lot less right now than they did even a year ago (in general). There are tons of boats around here for sale, some of the same ones at seeingly decent prices have been for sale for months... and these are not pieces of crap nor are the asking prices out of line by last year's standards. advertise everywhere you can, good pics, be realistic about pricing (do homework) and hopefully you'll find a buyer in good time.

I changed the title as I was doing some searches on the internet and stumbled on the idea of a raffle. Would anyone know if it is legal? There was something about charging an entrance fee and having those entering write a paragraph or two about why they would want to win, (in the articles case it was about a house, but I thought it might be able to carry over as well to boats).
What does everyone think? If the raffle was limited to 200 tickets for $200 each, would anyone here take a chance?

Thinking this might be an interesting idea. I sell a boat, and someone has an opportunity to own a $40,000 boat for $200. (Obviously they would have to pay the taxes).

Let me know what you think.

You would need to have a loooooooooong talk with the attorney general in your state to see what you would have to do to raffle a boat. My feeling is that you would probably need to be a non-profit to be allowed to do this. With boat sales being slow, you may want to look into donating the boat to a non-profit for the charitable tax deduction. Compare the value of the deduction to what you could get on a trade-in. Be sure to get the quote on the new boat with trade and without trade so that you know what you are really getting on the trade. Dealers will often add the discount to your trade in order to make it look like you are getting more for your trade tan you really are. I don't know how it is with boats, but I know with cars you may now only deduct what the charity actually gets for your donated car, not the "book value" so donating cars is not as attractive as it was a few years ago. In other words if you donate a car with a "book value" of $2000 but they can only sell it for $500, you can only deduct the $500. You will need to check the tax laws in your state.
The good news is that the value will also be lower on the boat that you want to buy so you will be able to recoup some of your loss on the purchase of the new boat. It is DEFINITELY a buyer's market right now.
