What is the difference between Gen I and II?

Just looking at outdrives as a option for a 4 cylinder powered boat built from plans. Which is better?<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Mark

i think the GEN II started about 1995 more or less a littel bit different water pump and just many small inprovements<br /><br />to me newer is better it depends on the budget there are a lot of good used parts out there<br /><br />tommays

The Gen 2 drive actually started in 1991. It is still the current production drive. There are several improvements. Shafting, bearings, etc... The water pump is certainly more forgiving to mishaps, whether they be running into sand, or even running dry. If given the choice... I choose the Gen 2. PS. Gen 2 speedo pick-up is on the drive also. No more pitot tubes screwed to the back of the boat! YEAH!
