What is the function of this wire?

I thank you for letting me ask a lot of questions, as well as answering them. I'm having a lot of fun playing with this motor, and so far I haven't done more damage than good. I was noticing on this DT-40 Suzuki that there is a wire about two thirds of the way down the side of the lower unit. It seems to bridge two components of the structure. As far as I can tell there are no electrical components there so what does the wire connect. Whoever had the motor before has the two ends butt connectored together. Is it some sort of a ground or is there a switch or sensor in that portion of the lower end? I've looked in the not very comprehensive manual that I have and it doesn't show anything. Plus I've seen this on other motors. Just really curious. Thanks

sounds like your describing a bonding wire. it keeps all the metal components at the same electrical potential to reduce galvanic corrosion. we dont reccomend splicing it.

what is the best method? Putting an eyelet on one end and screwing it down? I'm in fresh water.

importance varies with kind of usage and storage.

you've already stated fresh water use, which is better than salt.

if you trailer, the effects are minimal. if you store it in the water its more meaningful.
