What is the little unit with the spring that you can move up and down with my johnson 50hp? The new used trim unit i got has it, and the one on the motor appears the other owner took it off..The orginal owner left the 3 wires there just taped them up..What does this unit do? And should i put it back on or leave it off?

That's the sender for the PTT gauge. Check with the previous owner.... possibly it is no good, hence being taped off.

It's a sender unit for the T/T gauge to tell you mtr position when tilting up and down.

The gauge really has nothing to do with the operation of the PTT unit, it just shows you the tilt position of the engine at any given time. You don't need it.

If you can turn your head and see the attitude of the engine you don't need a trim gauge. If you have a large boat and cannot see the engine, then the trim gauge has some value.
