Hello
The FDE-11 1957 18 HP Johnson I am trying to fix has a plate, cover or something missing on a reservoir just on top of the carb. I don’t know if i can just make a metal plate or if it needs a part.
Is this a air filter chamber like on a lawnmower that holds a sponge? Should the lid I make have a gasket or vents or is something else necessary.

Thanks
Rob

Rob - Your best bet is to get the omc shop & parts manual & go from there. My guess is that you will need to hit ebay or a marine junkpile for another carb.

Re: What is the missing part?

Sounds like you're missing the top half of the air silencer. Have a look at Geekomatic's '58:
http://photobucket.com/albums/y18/geekomatic/?action=view&current=P4051196.jpg

There's no filter or anything in there. It's just to keep the intake noise down. Your outboard will start & run fine without it in place, but if you want to get a new one, have tcoutboard.com or some such online outboard junkyard send you a replacement. Can't cost much.

That’s fantastic thanks guys. It’s the top part of the little blue tank on the right side of the pic.
Just below it is a little silver coloured thing with a black rubber top on it? I’m not sure what it is and the top is somehow come loose.
