Ok, so I have tried the search function on multiple occasions using several different key terms and I cannot find the reciepe for "peanut butter" what do you guys suggest? I did find one reference to someone using some baking flour to get the consistency do you chop fibers into it? This is killing me! So tell me what everyone is doing so that I have a few Ideas on how to make it. PLUS for future searches it may help lost souls such as myself....

Thank you,

I use cabosil. West System sells it as "colloidal silica"

The way I have been doing it is with cabosil. I am using 3:1 epoxy. I mix the cab and epoxy without the hardener to a little thicker consitency than I want then add the hardener and adjust to get it to your liking. I have also found that even if you mix the two part together before mixing the cab in you really have a lot of time to work with it. I think the filler rejects some of the heat that builds up which means it kicks much slower. YMMV.

Pretty much the same recepie for poly.. I'm using 2 quart mixing buckets - I'll pour in 1 quart of poly, then pour in my filler (talc) to the top of the bucket. Mix it all up with a paint stirrer to a peanut butter consistency (hence the name 'peanut butter'), then add my hardender (for 1 qt. of poly).

I haven't tried adding hardener after adding the silica or glass spheres, but if you are using epoxy, it is pretty mandatory that the epoxy gets mixed with hardener BEFORE the thickeners are added or the epoxy may have permanent sticky spots.

I have used a silica called EZ Thick (do a search on yahoo) and it works well. Also have used wheat flour for small batches when just doing a touch up or plugging holes. Glass micro spheres thicken, but do not prevent sag, and they really add to the volume of resin when mixed in, unlike silica that seems to get absorbed.

Hello Jah..

Same as what Mark said on epoxy.. you must mix the resin before mixing your filler.

Poly is the other way around..

Your "PB" mix really depends on your application. ( as I work with mostly poly Ill go through that mix )

1. Cabosil and resin.. though makes a good mix it is still brittle in deeper applications.. used for small repairs.

2. Cabosil, resin, and fine chopped mat with scissors. Super heavy duty filler ( MO-HAIR ) used for deeper fills. IE outside radius corners. Dont build up too much at one time or it will get very hot and crack.

3. Cabosil and gelcoat ( Gelpaste ). mix longer to get a fine silky putty Used for small gelcoat chips and pinholes. ( should put some fine chopped mat for larger chips.. however it will discolor the gel and will have to be sprayed over )

With all Cabosil mixes..it is advisable to break up the "chunks" found in the powder via a "flour sifter" or use your fingers. It really helps with those pinholes after your fill and sand.

Personally..I only use mohair and gelpaste ( I sometimes add a touch of gelcoat to my mohair for white finished surfaces to get a white based filler before spraying..helps burn-throughs.

I do not use ANY out of the can mixes..Ever.. I know it makes your time from one step to another faster..but does not quicken the process as far as "time on project" overall.

There is no exact recipe for putty (peanut butter), since each resin will be slightly different, your starting point isn't always the same, it also depends on what you want to do with it.

Most include fumed silica (Cabosil, Aerosil, and other brands) to thicken it and help prevent sagging. The other products will thicken it also, but aren't nearly as good at stopping sag.

Talc can be used to create a smooth consistency, but its less water resistant and adds no strength.

Milled fibers (or you can cut up some CSM, but other types of fibers can be used also) will add strength, but tend to make the putty harder to work with. It may get very lumpy when you try to shape it into a radius, its rarely used alone. The shorter the fiber, the easier it is to work with.

Glass bubbles, micro balloons, spheres, are used to make the putty lighter and easier to sand, it may also generate less heat because the bubbles reduce the amount of resin needed.

There are other products that can be used, but they can be difficult to find.

The resin used will make a difference also, polyester makes very good putty, VE isn't quite as good and neither is epoxy.

Depending on how you want to use the putty the blend will be different. Straight silica if you just need a cheap do nothing putty, add fiber for strength, talc to make it smooth and bubbles for easier sanding. The ratio of each is up to you.

I know this topic is old(er), but I just had to say.. you guys rock! I was having a tough time getting putty to stop acting more like toothpaste and I knew I would find a nice, clean topic explaining what to use on here.

Thanks a dozen, dozen times.
