What is the Toughest 20HP and lower?

Think I might buy a 20HP outboard. My family used to fish Crawfish with Merc's in the Atchafalaya basin now they use Yamahas. These motors take a beating like no other. Cypress knee's, Mud, Swamp and logs. But from a technical standpoint which is the toughest? I want a motor to duck hunt with,Shallow water and same conditions.<br /> Thanks John

You might want to look into the new Merc product. <br /><br />If you are looking to get a 4 stroke you can get the bigfoot variation as well which will perform and withstand punishment better than any engine on the market.<br /><br />TMD

Hi, John.<br /><br />If you are willing to do your own routine maintenance you need to look at the Tohatsu/Nissan engines. <br /><br />Not only are the Tohatsus very popular with professional watermen worldwide because of their dependability, many small 2 and 4 stroke engines sold under other brand names are made by Tohatsu.<br /><br />Good luck.

Search for "go devil" and or "mud buddy".<br />These motors are wonderful when water gets shallow. Much better than any conventional outboard, no reverse though.<br />I have a 16HP Go devil. On a 14ft john boat it would go 20 MPH through water about an inch deep.<br />I now have it on a 19ft boat and it won't plane out. Still pushes great in water 6 inches deep.

I'm with ISkiH2O on this one... Go Devil is perfect for nasty waters full of stumps and who knows what else..<br /><br />If it's a conventional outboard your looking for, try a late 1980's johnson/evinrude.. Tuff as they come...

Snapperbait is right Johnson/Evinrude in the late 80's and early 90's are tough to beat! I had a 30 hp Johnson that just never quit!
