hey y’all. Just picked up a 2004 Stingray 190LS. I was unclogging the drain hole and open the engine bay to get it all cleaned up and I found this sitting in the water. What is if for and where does it actually belong?
It is a transducer for a depth finder. Does the boat have a depth finder on it ? If not it may have been too much work for one of the POs to pull the wire through the wire looms in the boat . Or he bought a new one and just pitched the old ducer in the bilge. " It " belongs on a bracket on the transom with the face of the ducer flush with the hulls bottom .Useless unless you have the matching brand Fish Finder . They are brand specific unless your into splicing micro wires.
No, it is not a in- hull or through- hull ducer. They are not shaped like what's in your picture. Most , not all people that go that route are usually fishermen and the boats reflect what they enjoy doing. Your rig does not fit that description . You can go to Airmar.com to look at all 3 types of ducers. Looks like a inexpensive model, doesn't even have a paddle wheel on it , yes I know some models use GPS for speed , doubt this is the case with what little info I have deciphered.
Actually after expanding the picture I would say the PO had somehow broke the plastic mounting "tangs " that were part of the ducer and like I said, didn't bother to take the wiring out ,easier to just pitch it in the bilge. I recently hit a submerged log, debris of some sort on Ontario and that impact ripped the plastic mounting tangs- and the metal bracket along with the the other half of the tangs are still in place on the transom. Is used for a Fishhawk down speed and depth unit. Must be happening to a lot of people as the ducers have been on company BO for a couple weeks now.Still works after I jury rigged it to a metal tubular swim platform. No choice with a charters and fishing tournaments.
I located what seemed to be some sort of silicone glue piece in the hull that assume came unstuck or unglued. It was in the same shape is the flatter portion of the ducer.
The shape of it , with the V in the front tells me it was SUPPOSED to be hung on a bracket from the transom. Now maybe the PO tried to glue it to the inside of the hull to see if it would work. I highly doubt it was made to be glued to the hull and probably [ guarantee ] didn't work installed that way.
