I was changing my zincs and out drive oil today and I noticed this on the side of the upper.

any idea what it is. If you turn it it only turns about a 1/4 or so turn each way. It doesnt come out or anything like that.

There is a plastic cover on the other side in about the same spot. I was gonna try to take it off to see if there is another one under it but its on there good and I didnt want to break anything.

I know I know I need to paint the thing. Just haven't gotten around to it yet with all the other work I have been doing to it.

the plastic cover is just a painted over cobra emblem there is nothing under it, the emblem on the screw side is missing or you wouldn't even see that screw and don't mess with it leave it alone.

Darn. Thought I found something cool.

But ummmm I already tried to turn it. It turned about 1/4 turn then stopped so I figured it wasn't a plug and I turned it back and left it alone.

Did I screw something up?

What exactly does it go to or do?

No your good, the screw has a nut on the other side that is not captured, meaning it will fall off and drop way down inside, then you have to pull the drive to fish it out, lucky for you the nut and all turned without uscrewing. I don't think anyone has a definitive answer on why it's there, maybe a holing fixture for assembly line, I've heard many different reasons for it being there.

Oh I see

Yea when I turned it back (right) it got tight so I'm guessing it is still attached. I will double check tom

Kinda weird cause when I tried turning it out it turned then stopped like it was some kind of release mechanism.

Guess I got lucky on this one.

The nut on the backside is a weird looking contraption, can't remeber exactly what it looks like but there are some pics on this forum in an old thread, you could search for.

tighten it up, epoxy over it, forget it exists.
its part of the water drain system but never used.
best I can tel it was used to line up something during case machining.

Yes do not take off like I did, I thought that was my oil drain just forgot it was on the other side, the other end is just a piece of rectangular metal with threads in it and like the guys said ,does not make sense, one things for sure though water does go through there from the impeller to engine room, I had blown the upper bearing so I had to take off anyways, I put it back on and it wasn't easy there is no room to grasp the nut to put it back in place, I think I used a stick and duct tape and Mcguyvered it back on, Dont take off! Happy Boating!

Yeah. It's really not all that big a "deal".

If you do loosen it or remove it, you have to remove the drive to put it back on.

None of the service manuals mention it and no one seems to know why it's there.

Is this screw on the port side about in the middle of the OD? If so, and you loosen it too much you will have to remove the OD to get the nut that is in the inside to put it back on.

Re: What is this on Cobra out drive???

Ok Thanks everyone.

Luckily it didnt seem to come loose past 1/4 turn so I didnt take it off. If it would have came loose I would have took it out and would be taking the drive off right now.

Maybe there should be a sticky in the Tech info for DIYers FAQ that says DO NOT take the screw out of the cobra drive!!!
