What is this on my engine?

After putting my engine back together after a blown head gasket, I have a wire left over! I have no idea what it is as everything seems to be working correctly. The piece that is broken is on the gold colored round piece on the thermostat housing. It has an electical connector that attach's to it and the tab for it is broken off of the round thing. Lower right center of the picture, right above the belt. What is it? I could not find it anywhere in my manual. Thanks!

A little more info: It's a 2000 Volvo Penta 3.0 GSM-A. The temp gauge still works as does the thermostat.

Just guessing. Is a temp. sending switch or transducer for a temp indicator, warning light or buzzer. Maybe for the engine electronic controls if so equiped. FRED

My mers 3.0 LX doesn't have that but it does have the wire and connector to the immediate right (temp sendig unit) it must be a flow switch of some sort ? just buy a new eye connector and splice back into the wire and reattach it.

Re: What is this on my engine?

I would guess it to be a temp sensor for an overheat warning buzzer
