What is this on my trailer?

On the side of the trailer frame near the hitch end there is this bolt with a C-clamp, which slides in the empty oval area. When I tow the trailer the bold slides forward and then when I brake the bolt slides back. Anyone know how do I fix this?

I notice this cap in the other photo. Maybe it has something to do with it.

If you can't already tell, I'm a new boater.

It's a brake fluid resevoir and master cylinder assembly for your trailer brakes, it's supposed to move to apply and release pressure on the trailer brakes.

Welcome to iboats.

You don't want to "fix" that.

It is the actuator for your trailer brakes.

Thank you guys :)

One thing.. when I backed it up in my back yard, it was press all the way back and I had to drive a little forward to get it moved forward to unhitch the trailer. Is that expected?

there should be a manual brake lockout, to disable the brakes when needed

I think it is that pin on the end of that cable hanging from the forward "bolt with c-clamp" and likely goes into a hole in the top of the grey metal in front of the red metal.
