What is this plug for?

I have a 1956 Evinrude 10 hp model 10012. On the engine there is a silver metal plug ( size of 1/4 dollar) with the model and serial # of the motor stamped on it. (There could be even 2 ) I thought it would be a frost plug but make no sense having a front plug on a outboard. Any ideas?

It's jusr an I.D. tag, there is nothing under it. I don't know why they are sometimes missing. Probably for the same reason some newer electric start engine's having welding cables.
