I found this in my garage today in a box of spare parts that I have laying around. It DEFINATELY doesnt look like a prop for the motors that I have, and I'm not sure where it came from. I don;t see any numbers on it.

I also have this cone that I'm thinking is off of a johnny rude, but must be bigger than my 5.5. Mine has a rubber cone without a cotter pin, so I was thinking it came off of something bigger.

The cone, by my measurments has an outside diameter of 1 3/4", the threads are 5/8"

Boy you are digging into my memory bank, but it looks like part of it is missing....the rubber shock absorber that has a notch in it to fit the notch in the bottom of the prop.

It isn't for your 5.5?

Mark

Re: What is this???

I am going to look around in that box of parts I have again, but I dont think the rubber hub is in there. Its an odd looking prop though eh, almost trolling motor like.........which came to mind as well. I just can see a troller swinging an aluminum prop, but I could very well be wrong.

Im almost positive its not for the 5.5, because I dont see a place to put a shear pin. That and the cone on the 5.5 is rubber and needs a lip to grab onto since there is no cotter pin pinning it to the prop shaft.

I was thinking since the cone I have pictured is soooo big compared to the 5.5, maybe its for a 25 or 35hp motor.......but I dont have any reference numbers to back that up.

Well sir, back to dusting off my memory, you would not have had a shear pin as the rubber hub would have taken the shock. This dates the prop to outboard motor and the year had to be late '60's or higher.

See, Merc had the slip clutch for years and it took OMC awhile and a lot of weeweeing and moaning from consumers to convince them that the shear pin was a no-no, couse it always sheared when you needed it the most...rip rap on the winward side with a gale blowing.

I too thought about a trolling motor prop, but I have not seen an aluminum prop on a trolling motor.

Mark

Hey Pony. Your pic tour is fantastic. Really a nice job. The more I look at the prop and the one hanging off the skeg of your 5.5 the more I see a similarity.

Mark

Wouldn't the shear pin go through the inner sleeve of the missing hub?

Re: What is this???

It looks like to me the prop is for one of the old trolling motors.I have seen one, years ago that had a aluminum prop on it.The cone looks like the one that was on my dads 45 hp chrysler outboard he had when I was a kid.I remember those motors had a big block and a little lower unit.Made them look funny. You know unportioned. Like a 150 block with a 9.9 lower unit. Hope this helps.

This is why I don't see it being for my 5.5hp. This is the prop for it. (1 of 3 that I have)

Re: What is this???

^ I know this is a prop topic, but mods do think maybe the j/e forum would get more results....being most of the guys over there are familiar with the older johnnyrudes.

Thanks for the compliment Texasmark. It was a fun project.

I know someone with a 35hp 1957 Johnson and we each measured the cones. We think it will fit his motor. I am now just trying to figure out what that propeller is......looks similar to those on the hd-25 but not quite.
