Hello-
I am in the market for a 21' used hydra-sport CC 3100 lbs trailer ?lbs. I bought a f150 supercrew (5.4L) this year. Question is; before I actually find the right used boat, I am affraid I might not have enough truck. Considering boat weight, trailer, fuel, gear, and etc....I want to know my limitations. If I am reading my manual right, I can tow upto 7100-7700 lbs (12,500 gcwr). I can't seem to find what my truck weighs? I will need tow it approx. 1hr each way (flat ground). Any information/experiences with this boat or any others would be appreciated.
thanks
Rob  :(

I pull my HydraSports 212 CC with my '94 GMC Z-71. It's 5.7L, with @ 103K miles on it. No problem. I've pulled bigger boats with Fords with the 302 and the ol' 300 six. No problems there, either.

Rear axle ratio is important. I wouldn't want anything less than a 3.50:1. The ol' 9-inch Ford with 3.50 gears was indestructible.

Oh, yeah. Love the boat, too.

What year ya lookin' at? Mine's an '01 Seahorse with a Johnson 150. It's got more room in it than any other 21 footer I've seen. Beam is 8' 8". Ride is really solid for such a wide boat. Nice and dry, too. Construction is impressive.

Re: WHAT IS YOUR TOW VEHICLE

Beernutz-
I want a realitively new boat, however, if I can find that perfect one with all the gear without spending $33,000 +, then that's what I want to do. There's got to be one of those guys out there that bought a boat when the stock market was peaking and now selling for raise cash since the marker is in the crapper!
Is there anything about your seahorse that you regret having or not having? Last years boat show I took my wife (not telling her what I wanted) and after looking at all the different boats the 21' cc hydra-sports is what you like the best! It is destiny I figue.
Thanks again for the info.
rob

Re: WHAT IS YOUR TOW VEHICLE

You better be ready to jump quick, Rob. I don't see many used ones for sale. Everybody I've run into loves 'em. I'd definitely go for a late model, though. I think it was 2000 that they went to 100% composite construction. They're being made by Genmar now. My previous experience with Genmar Wellcrafts was excellent, so this could actually be an improvement.

I've made a few "improvements" to suit my style and use, but I have no complaints. Except for the scuppers. They're a little high, so she doesn't drain as well as I'd like. They should be down even with the floor of their pockets in the deck. I'm going to lower them as soon as I find the fittings I need. The fiberglass is much thicker than I'd expected everywhere that I've cut or drilled thru it to add stuff. I removed the head from the console. You'd need to wear a Bellstar helmet to go down there to use it anyway. If ya can't use a bucket on the deck, stay on the dock! The storage space in that console is awesome. The boat draws very little water, too, considering the 18 degree deadrise. Probably due to it's beam.

Shop around. You oughta be able to pick up a new one for well under $30K. Log on to their website, and price one out, equipped the way you want it: www.hydrasports.com

Dunno where you live, but here's a huge dealer in the Keys, I think it's on Tavernier, that quotes some pretty good prices over the phone and will even deliver it. I bought mine from The Boat Tree in Jacksonville. Salesman "Mike" made me a deal that was $3K better than the best I could do after working with my local dealer for months. I didn't even tell him the other prices I'd been given. Just told him how much I was willing to pay to get it out the door, and he got within $200. 'Course it may have had something to do with that '01 Johnson hanging on the back. You know....the OMC bankruptcy and all that year. But I have over 500 hrs on it, without a minutes trouble. And that's been some pretty hard use! I got them to throw in the 5-yr extended warantee. Maybe you can find one of them, and get lucky, too. A big dealer like the one in the Keys should be anxious to move 'em. Just make sure about the motor warantee. I hear Bombardier is picking them up, but would want it in writing.

Bottom line? This is the best boat I've owned, and there's been a bunch of 'em. Make sure you get the "value package". Your wife will love the front cushion, and it doesn't get in the way of the fish boxes.

Did I mention how roomy this boat is?

Re: WHAT IS YOUR TOW VEHICLE

Your problem won't be on the open road, that's for sure... where you may run into problems is on the actual boat ramp. Pick up trucks have the towing capacity you need for as much as 7 to 12000 lbs, depending on the truck. What we have problems with here in Texas is SLICK and steep ramps. My friend actually lost his truck in the lake last year because of the slime on the ramp... The truck was in park with the emergency brake to the floor...

whenever we load up, we end up doing a "power load" which means we use the boats power to PUSH the truck up the ramp.... we kill the ignition when we hear the exhaust pipes come out of the water.

Pickup trucks are so light in the back, they actually SUCK on slick steep ramps...

Just my experience....

Ya got that right, Rat! That's why I don't buy anything but 4WD. With 2WD and no limited slip differential, you're doomed.

Next time you're stuck on the ramp, and everybody's standing abound watching and waiting with grumpy faces, tell 'em to jump in the back for traction.

Texas slime is pretty tough, huh? We got it here, too.

Beernutz-
Again thanks for the information! the one thing I know for sure is that I have time on my side. Maybe after the 2003's get on the market I can track down the boat I want. I am way up here in NJ and my local dealer didn't seem to have much of anything right now. However, we will see.
:) rob

Re: WHAT IS YOUR TOW VEHICLE

I have a 2001 SuperCrew 4X4, 4.6L with the Tow Package AND the correct radiator. You are reading the manual correctly, and should be able to tow that rig with no difficulty at all. The SCrew 4X4 weighs in at about 4900lbs, towing 5000 to 6000 lbs is not an issue, the rear-end gear ratio is great for loads and you can always unlock the converter for those 45-50 MPH roads with hills. Stopping is always the biggest issue with a heavy loead, particularly on the highway in moderate traffic. Take care and have fun.

Re: WHAT IS YOUR TOW VEHICLE

Hi!!
I think that you must take care about the slope of the ramp and also if its slimed. I saw some trucks having real troubles only to get out the ramp (without the boat). I think because the trucks rear is too light. Personally I get on trouble with my 99 F-150 5.4l Super Cab but what I do now is take my wife´s Cherokee 4x4 and thats all...Ready for towing, launch and recover (okey its only the 6in line 4.2l but !it works!.
If you cannot get a 4x4, be prepared with some slings or chains in order that somebody else can take out you, your truck and boat from that slimed ramp :)

19.5' celebrity bow rider... pushing 4klbs with trailer and gear.

Bought the boat, and all I had was a '94 S-10 Blazer. Towed it the 3 hours back from the lake. realized right then... I need a bigger vehicle.

Picked up a 1971 G30 RV Van. 5.7L 1ton
All it needs is tuneup, brakes, and tires and it's ready to go. $600 bucks, couldn't pass it up.

Be sure to read the owners manual before you tow anything!!! Most of the new trucks with automatic overdrive require you to use 3rd gear or drive while towing, not overdrive...

Re: WHAT IS YOUR TOW VEHICLE

I tow a 3200lb boat with my 1998 4WD Nissan Pathfinder at the speed limit with no problem. I have almost lost 2WD trucks here in texas on slippery ramps. 4WD is a must, and for those really tuff situations or to help out larger rigs the 4WD low cannot be beat.

3200lb boat with 98 jeep grand cherokee 2wd v8. I have no problems on ramps getting out. But it may just be the kinds of ramps I'm going on though some are pretty steep. My only problem is remembering that I'm towing a boat usually cannot feel it back there even in the mountains! Use overdrive only on flat areas otherwise its off. :D

Re: WHAT IS YOUR TOW VEHICLE

A posting like this shows me that the auto mfgs are missing the boat completely. Give me a full size pick-up with a GM 3.8 front wheel drive......
No need to drag around a second drive train 99% of the time, suck gas for nothing, and have the hump in the floor eat up leg room.
