Hey everybody! This controller plug was on a boat I just recently bought I don't know what kind of motor it goes to. I'm hoping you guys can use your wealth of knowledge and help me out. What models/years would it fit on? Thanks!

Looks like a Merc plug from the late 80s and 90s. However, my knowledge in this area is limited.

Those would be my exact words too.

Can you say fairly certainly that it is not a Johnson or Evinrude plug? Is there any way to adapt these plugs to each other?
Thanks!

Well, generally all motors need the same kind of wiring. So you could probably do some sort of an adaptor plug. You want it to be reliable, corrosion resistant and of the correct AWG.

Control and control cables for throttle and shift are not compatable between Mercs and Johnnyrudes.

Correct - it is NOT a Johnrude plug. It's usually easier to just swap around to the correct wiring harness to match your motor rather than try to cobble something together.

I make it to be a Mercury of about Mark 30 or Mark 55 vintage. Or even a Merc Dockbuster. Could be wrong.

All the merc plugs I've seen are female for the older models (tower of power). Could this be a later model? 80's? or 90's? Also are Johnson and Evinrude controls and throttle and shift linkages similar enough to be interchangeable?

Would the controls, linkages, etc from a 1971 Johnson 125 hp be interchangeable with a 1973 Evinrude 135 hp? With all you guys wealth of knowledge which of these motors do you think is the better? Thanks.

No, they would not. 1971 is electric shift, while 1973 is hydromechanical shift - two COMPLETELY different systems. Once you get past the electric shift era, Johnrude controls become much more compatible across years as they used the venerable "Red Plug" wiring harnesses for over 20 years.

To answer your other question, yes, the Mercury plug is from a 1980s to 1990s era motor. It is NOT for Mark 30/55 of the 1950s.

Chinewalker thanks for the info. Thats a bummer. I've got good controls for the Johnson 125 but my control for the Evinrude 135 are shot. Are the steering linkages compatible?

Well now that depends. 1973 will accept tilt tube steering cable mount. 1971 will not. You could use the 1971 transom mount setup on the 1973 but you can't use 1973 tilt tube steering on a 1971 (unless you use a transom mount). I guess what I'm saying is the cables are the same, but motor connections are different. Also, a cable that was fitted to a tilt tube will be too long if you put it through a transom mount. And of course there are other options beside those two.

bottom line: You can hook up the steering, just varies in the hardware.
