I just bought a 74 Magnum with a Mercury 115 horse outboard. It runs fine, but has been sitting up for a few years. What should I check/Change before taking it out?

Thanks
Brian

Hello,

Anytime an engine sits long, the impeller should be replaced. The rubber they are made of stiffens and they take the shape of the housing. Additionally, many of them begin to form small cracks where the fins meet the metal housing and when the engine finally runs, the impeller doesn't work as efficiently and may lose a blade all together. The kits are inexpensive and easily replaced with workshop manual in hand.

You should also, change the lower unit lube, Pull the prop and check the shaft seal for wear, and grease all fittings. Also, be on the lookout for a fuel bulb that doesn't get hard when priming the carbs. This is a sur sign the floats are stuck in the carb bowls. This happens when interizing is not done or the engine sits with fuel that gums up the floats, jets, and passage ways.

Ditto what meme said. I just had to clean the carbs on my motor. It had been sitting for 4 years. The "throats" on 'em looked great. BUT, the bowls were in terrible shape. Only took a little time to clean them, though, and I am no boat mechanic. Just used the manual.
Don't be fooled by the externals and how they look. The stickiness is on the float and needle valves, etc.

Good luck!

Jason
