what kind of motor is this thing

i just recently bought an old troller from a yardsale. the guy told me that it is a 1953, 4 hp.but what kind? it was made at the clinton manufacturing co. in clinton michigan. tha model#is j7, the serial#is 38186,and the type#is 10-13-7-0-4-5. it does run. can anyone help me out? if so i would really appreciate the help. thanx to all and God bless.

Hi Dan,<br /> Your motor is definitely a Clinton. It was an air-cooled motor, made most likely in the 1960s. I believe the J-7 was the 7hp. Clintons shared a lot of parts with the Eskas of the same vintage. They were marketed as entry-level motors. Rather cheap, loud, and buzzy running. On the upside, they're very simple, easy to work on, and many parts are available at a small engine shop.<br />- Scott

You have the same engine I have. It is a Clinton, model. J7, my serial number is 38766. I don't know how the HP is rated. The guy I bought my boat and motor from said it was a4.5 HP. Anyway I'm looking for a part to my motor. Your powerhead is used for all kinds of applications, your part may be available at a small engine shop.otherwise watch for it or<br /> a parts motor on ebay.<br />By the way the Clinton uses a water cooled exhaust<br />leg be sure water sprays out of the relief holes.<br />Older motors use a simple pickup tube behind the prop for water.Newer motors have a water pump.
