What Kind Of Plywood For Transom?

I have a little 14' jon boat that I am having to replace the transom in (too much flex with a 25hp motor). The plywood that I took out is 1 1/4" plus it is rotten in some places. I was going to glue two 5/8" pieces of BC or AC plywood. Then paint with oil based enamel. Is there any special type of plywood to use or will this be okay?

Thanks,
Robert

BC will be fine, its the thickness that holds bigger motors, also a 25hp on a 1.25' thick will be fine.

Use marine grade plywood. Not so much because it is waterproof but because it has no voids and is therefore stronger.

I just rebuilt the transom on my 18' Starcraft last weekend. Check out Arauco Plywood..AC.. available at Home Depot or Lowes. No voids, and knots only on one side. I used two layers of 3/4" on mine and it was only $24 a sheet. You might want to seal the wood with an epoxy resin before painting as well.

I used PT plywood on my 18ft. Crestliner utility over 20 years ago un painted and un sealed.Still going strong.Spent April to Dec.in the water the rest outside until about 5 years ago.You may want to check modern day pt for compatability with aluminum.
