After several good seasons and a few refurbishings I think my old prop is worn out. Im looking at getting a replacement but, since I have not had to shop for one before, do not know what to get. Any info you all could provide would be great. Thanks

Outdrive: 1988 Mercury Alpha 1 "R"
Engine: 1988 Mercruiser 5.7 350 V-8
Hull: 1988 23' Celebrity Crown Line V
Current Prop: Quicksilver 16316 48 A4 19P (not exactly sure what the numbers mean)

I get the impression you refurbed this thing every year. Props should last much longer than this. Something doesn't sound right. I've got props decades old that are original and work fine.

If you are happy with the way the boat performs, get the same thing.

Most the lake around here are pretty shallow so every year ends with several new dings and dents. Most of the metal on the blades looks thick yet but I dont know how many times it can be ground, straightened and, polished.

Re: What kind of prop should I get?

There is a sticky at the very top of this forum titled READ THIS FIRST. You gave us no performance data which is required to make a recommendation. We don't know how you use your boat either. If you do a lot of skiing or towing water toys that takes a different prop than if you never do that and spend your time fishing or cruising. One prop can do the job but requires a compromise. Your current prop is a Merc 19P. But since you said it has been refurbished a number of times, it may no longer be a 19P so any performance data you give us may be the effect of an 18P or a 20P depending on how the prop was reworked. So even though you give us performance data, we will have no choice but to base our recommendations on 19P numbers. If you are getting the idea prop selection is sort of a crap shoot you would be correct. And the less data or more inaccurate the data is the more of a guess it becomes.

If you are simply looking to get a new replacement prop for your existing one, the task is quite simple. Based on the part number you supplied, you have a 14 inch diameter x 19 inch pitch Mecrcury Vengence prop. You can easily get an equivalent sized prop here at iboats from Solas by ordering PN1531-140-19. This prop is also a 14 x 19 inch prop and is a high quality SS prop designated as their New Saturn design and is a great value for the money.

Thank you, thats probably what I'll end up doing. I wasnt sure what the seiral numbers meant though. After looking into some of the calculations to try and figure a new prop I decided.. why mess with a good thing, lol.

Ayuh,...

If you're running Aground often,... Don't buy a SSteel wheel....

You'll be replacing Outdrives,+ parts, rather than just props...

Re: What kind of prop should I get?

Knot Waiting currently has a stainless prop and has been using it for many seasons. He seems satisfied with it's performance and service life and seemingly just wants to replace it with a new equivalent. That was the basis for my answer.
