What kind of ride from a modified v hull?

I'm looking at a used Pursuit (Tiara) cuddy cabin. It is 22' and has a transom bracket with an older 225 Johnson. Anyway, the seller says it has a modified v hull. Looking at the boat (it is on the trailer) the entry at the bow looks fairly sharp, and then starting at about midships back towards the transom the bottom of the hull rounds off. At the transom the bottom the of the hull comes to a fairly rounded edge not a point like I have seen in most other V hulls this size. I'm wondering how a hull shaped like this will run in rough water? I'm thinking that it may pound quite a bit due to the roundness towards the rear. I have been on another Pursuit 22 center console that rides quite well, but I don't think the hull is shaped the same as this boat. the years are most likely different too. I suppose the rounded rear will help the boat plane off quicker. The seller did say that it is a fairly fast boat. The boat I'm looking at is a 1983' hull 22'. If anyone is familiar with this hull or has any usefull input I'd appreciate hearing it. Thanks, Nick.

Hard to say just like that. You may find though, that moving up to 25 feet or so often gives a much more stabile ride.

Guess you'll have to take her for a ride and see for yourself, which would be a good idea in any case.

Unfortunately, that is not possible. It also needs a new fuel tank, so I have to buy it out of the water as is. I understand that a boat that size will act its size in big seas, but I don't want to get into a boat that pounds away in 1-2 foot seas on a plane. Even if the boat is solid.

I guess it all depends on your interuptation of pounding and whay you want to do with the boat. A deep Vee gives a better ride but the trade off is that they roll considerably more when at rest than a Mod-V. I rarely run offshore so I took the conforts of less rock over less bounce in my case.

I've got a 22' Grady with a bracket and a mod V hull and in 1-2 seas I can run 26-28 kts and at rest it's a pleasure to fish from. You hear a lot of people tak about how bad a Grady pounds but just about everyone that's been on my boat comments on how well it rides so you call it.

The bracket will make that boat run much bigger than it actually is. Mine rides more like a 24-25 boat would.

If your boat has a hull anything similar to this one (1986 Pursuit 23'), you should be in good shape.

As long as the forward hull angle is fairly sharp, you can trim it down to slice the waves nicely.

Theory says you may not be able to go quite as fast in the waves as you could have with a real deep V-hull, but you should have a really stabile boat at standstill and at lower speeds.

But, then again, this is all just guesswork on my part. The main thing is how tolerant you are of waves, because the boat will in any case probably be able to handle more of those than any of us can.

Please let us know how it goes!

Stevens. That is a very similar hull. Only I'm looking at a 22'. I would think these hulls would roll more at a standstill, although the little fins on the outer edges must help the stability. So you guys think that hull will cut through a chop well?

Don't exspect a cuddy cabin to ride like a CC. The weight forward design of the cabin makes for a rougher ride.

I consider 1 to 2's almost flat. All you have to do is slow down with a M/V. If speed is your thing, then wait for a D/V. Lots of M/V's in your area to check out. Good luck.

JRJ. Don't mean to sound stupid, but what do you mean by 1 to 2's? Also, what do you guys think the deadrise of that hull is at the transom? Thanks, Nick.

Waves of 1 to 2 feet of height, maybe, like Dingbat spoke of above?

On the West Coat I'd have to agree but a 2' chop on the East coast can be a whole different story.

You can get up and plane of a short 2’ chop you can certainly blast right through 2' but it's the notorious 2' washing machine chop of the Sounds and Bays that will beat you to death.

I've got a 20 degree deadrise and that hull looks much steeper than mine.
