What kind of trim adjuster/motor mount is on this boat?

I've attached a picture of a 1988 18' Marlin cuddy that has a 135hp outboard mounted on the back in a gigantic, black mount of some kind. What kind of motor mount and hydraulic trim adjustment device is this? The seller of the boat said the boat came this way from the factory, but it looks to me like someone removed an in/out drive, patched the hole in the back of the boat, and mounted this enormous black motor mount extention on the transom. Is anyone familiar with this approach to mounting outboard engines? Is it an anachronism of the late 1980s, or are these still in use? Are they effective, or troublesome junk?

Thats the first time I have seen a beast like that. Interesting but I would stay away from it just because it's rare.
