Looking for opintion of what type of knot to use to splice 30lb Power Pro brain the 20lb Big Game mono fishing line. I have my reels backed with the mono and want to splice the brain on to it.

Also after the brain I want to splice 20lb fluorocarbon leader to the braid. Never done it and I have my reasons for doing it, extra prize at a local tournoment/derby if you use the Power Pro. So I need to figure it out.

All suggestions will be appreciated, as I never spliced line before. I do tye my own spinners, so not unaccustom to tying knots.

The power pro should come with a little manual that tells you how to do it. I've used the knot they describe and it holds up very well.

There are probably a dozen knots that work. One of them is the uni-knot. That is what I use for everything, including connecting my 50# Power Pro working line to 30# mono backup.

I never had a uni-knot fail, ever.

I've used that very configuration albeit with different brands and have always had good results with a blood knot.

I use the surgeon's knot. Has always worked well for me. Probably lots of others that would work just as well.

This is the knot I was referring to earlier straight from the power pro site (uni knot like JB said)...

Looks like a good one. Very similar to a blood knot with the exception being in a blood knot the tag ends meet in the middle rather than going on the end. Uni looks stronger actually. Might give that one a shot if I ever get to go fishing again. This is a really neat resource for help with knots.

In a hurry, I tie a double uni (~70%) with 10 turns on braid. Better safe than sorry or using heavy lines, the Slim Beauty (~95%) gets the call.

I use an albright knot with spectra over the mono 20 turns, whip the spectra tag end 3 turns, then melting the spectra with a lighter to form a small bead. The mono is cut as close as possible to the knot with finger nail clippers. This knot is very compact and flows through the guides well, never had one fail either. The nice thing about this knot, (the way I tie it) there are no tag ends to foul things up or dig into your fingers.

The albright knot is on the PowerPro website too, though I think they show it backwards with the mono being whipped over the spectra.

If you haven't worked with spectra before, be careful as it can cut you easily while tightening the knot, I have the perma-scar to prove it  At home I wear a cheap brown jersey glove on the spectra hand (finger tips cut off) or wrap it around a dowel, pull my coat sleeve over my hand, etc.

ya the blood knot, just make sure to leave alot of line ,bite the line keeping it from sliding thru,I use an oval ring for leaders, they have diff, sizes,I use one that is rated for 20lb ,the oval shape holds the line at each end

Well I used the uniknot. It worked great. 4 wraps for the mono and 8 wraps for the braid. Then when I trimed them I melted the ends into a bulge so it will stop it from coming undone.

Burning the ends in a braid/mono connection is futile. Slip failures in well tied knots are rare. Failures almost always involves the braid cutting thru the mono at the "butt" of the connection. This is why knots like the Slim Beaty, Red Philips and 10X10 knots are so popular.

Surgeon's knot is flawless and can be done in the dark. Works for any line-to-line connection.

Double polomer knot. When in doubt, go with a polomer. Never had a polomer slip, weather its mono, florocarbon, nylon or anything...google it...
