I believe any one from 1983 till 1989 should be a direct swap. That's my experience.
According to the parts breakdown anything from 1977 to 1989 will work.It needs to be from a 85hp.The 125 is a different gear ratio. It will work if that's all you can find.
Also the length of the drive shaft can be different. Most come with a 20 or 25"

NO!!!! Check out, from 1988 there is a two piece drivershaft on the 85Hp. I think if you have a two piece drivershaft gearcase, 1988-1990 will fit. May bee 1991-1994 also fits but I am not sure. I am restoring a 90Hp 1991-92 with a bad gearcase and I am searching for a good used gearcase.

My 88/85 twins have a 1 piece drive shaft.
You have a two piece check the parts diagrams.

My 89 has a 2 peice driveshaft too, and water pump impellers are VERY specific for these. I am guessing that there was a redesign somwhere close to 88-89, as the driveshaft diameters can vary, mine being larger daimeter than earlier versions? Don't quote me on that though.

That water impeller house is a Mercury design, works much better than the old Chrysler design. Pump alot more water and don?t get pited at the innerwall couse of stainless steel instead of alu.
