whats the difference in the short block as far as crank rod piston etc. in a marine short block vs. a non marine? im using the top end off the orig. merc. 305 and im building a fairly stock bottom end to put in my boat and am wondering now if what i have will hold up...i have a 350 block, stock four valve relief flat top piston 5.7 bowtie rods and a steel chevy 3.48 stroke crank(stock) is this correct? or is there something different i need....im using the cam that was in the merc 305 that was in the boat and bought a marine gasket kit for this build what else do i Have to have in order for this to be something to use yearly instead of throwing a motor in it and a forsale sign on it....thanx

This has been discussed quite a few times - you might want to do a search.

Basically you want brass core (freeze) plugs.

The marine gasket set will have the proper head gaskets. (But truth be told, a Fel Pro gasket set will more than likely have a SS or composite head gasket that will work just fine).

I wouldn't suggest putting the 305 heads on the 350 block. Can cause compression and flow issues.

Good luck!

Mine has a tag that says Mercruiser on it. ;);):) But as stated a search on the subject will provide a wealth of info.

With the flat-top pistons, you want heads that are near 76cc chambers. Many 305 heads have smaller valves than the 350 heads. You might want to find a pair of heavy duty 350 truck heads (76cc).

You might also want to indicate what vintage 350 and 305 parts you are useing.

I think this subject should be made a sticky...

way too many conflicting opinions about it, it would take about a year to read through all the info and then some hemming and hawing to make ones own decision about it

I agree there should be a sticky for "What's the difference between a marine and car/truck motor".

IMHO: This question has more to do with 305/350 part mixing. ie, not the one you want to start the "sticky" with.
